Now, I know what everyone may be thinking right off the bat. However... There are many, many cars and competitive track vehicles with no ABS everywhere in all different classes, so this is a proper question to ask, with legitimate reasons. A few Z32's have even had this modification done for track/motorsports purposes, but there are very few absolute concrete discussions on the matter... So, for those Z32 enthusiasts that actually road course their cars, whether it be competitively or not. I am sure you are aware that our stock braking system, especially the pedal feel, is not the best even when upgraded. I have personally been weighing a few factors as my upcoming big brake upgrade quickly approaches, and I have been thinking of biting the bullet, and re-engineering my Z's braking system, ala re-routed custom hardlines, Brake proportioning valve (very important), and improved steel AN fittings, etc.
Just looking for some input as to what others may think. I feel, that in a situation, where someone has a properly tuned brake setup, a system with NO ABS can be modulated closer to the limit, with less chance of computer interference, and therefore a better overall driving experience, and possibly better lap times. Below are pro's and cons I have listed.
Pros:
- Eliminating over ~25 Feet of Brake plumbing (Improved pedal feel) - Eliminating the ABS pump, therefore eliminating any potential problems, or gas bubble cavitation in that area. - Better brake modulation closer to the limit, better brake feel. - Weight savings (Not really a concern though) - System Simplification - Less Potential Leak Points Cons:
- Possible lock up - Threshold Braking - Emergency situations, must be able to panic brake properly - Flat spotting of expensive tires at high speeds, costly! I think this is a worthwhile idea to note for track Z people, obviously it's an unecassary mod for Street Z's, and I wouldn't risk it. However, for someone like me that doesn't drive their Z in the rain, and wants to do a lot of competitive events, I could see some great gains in brake feel, modulation and performance.
Opinions?
Also, see below for the only pictures of an ABS delete I have ever seen on a Z32

Thanks for looking!
